Art is a strange necessity, lacking
which life can be a poor, maimed thing. In earlier India, all its mythologies,
as all its thoughts, were expressed in a figurative language of signs and
symbols. Thus we had some great sculptural reliefs, paintings as well as the
highly developed dance and musical forms of the land. With the modern movement
most of all that has been put away on the backburner. But the baby need not be thrown out with the
bath water. Poor craftsmanship is a terrible thing, which kills poetic ideas.
But those ideas and ideals themselves were often profound, full of nourishing
life minerals.
